Midterm Idea: Lost Narratives

No Tags | Hacking Story Frameworks

I would like to use this project as an opportunity to resurrect lost urban (New York) histories and narratives in the face of gentrification. Particularly focusing on the West Village and LGTBQ history that is rooted there.  This is a cause that is very dear to my heart because as a 12 year New Yorker, who grew up low income and identifies as queer, the histories represented in this neighborhood often reflect a part of my personal narrative and my understanding of home.

As these histories disappear and our resulting collective memory fades, so does our nuanced understand of place and self.

The Challenge:

  • Lost urban narratives
  • Gentrification
  • Queer community
  • Loss of community/public/queer space
  • Cultural amnesia

Guiding Principles:

  • Value to past narratives
  • Understanding of community/ communal roots / communal identity
  • Explorations of current and past states of urban environment
  • Trailblazers: celebration/appreciation of work those that came before , standing on the shoulders of glamazonians.

Goals:

  • Remember past narratives
  • Celebrate the past and the communities who paved the way

Tone:

  • Playful
  • Pleasant
  • Capturing the feeling of the west village in the 80s

Audience:

  • Queers
  • Historians
  • Tech
  • AR groupies
  • NY
  • Party Kids
  • West Village Residents
  • NYU peeps

The Concept:

Embed the Nelson Sulivan video archive (currently owned and cared for by Bobst) into the physical space of current day New York – such that a user may simultaneously experience the present and past of the physical urban space of the Village.
