User Profile:

Sam is a data analyst and media strategist for We The Protesters. He works from home, and presumably, drinks a lot of coffee!

As a media strategist, Sam has to monitor, fact-check, and respond to talking points from the press regarding issues of racial justice and police reform. This has to be done at break-neck speed, because “journalist twitter” moves very quickly. Sometimes, damage-control has to be done with equal speed as well.

Sam is extremely nimble with the various media platforms. He reads deeply into Twitter for not only its content, but can forecast how conversations will play out based on certain indicators or metadata. For example, he can mentally track the movement of a tweet to predict when it will go viral, and take the time to prepare certain data or messaging in advance. He also uses tools like Slack to better privately strategize with his team.

For our observations we decided to focus on the movement of social media and spent an hour watching the hashtag “#blacklivesmatter”. The result were fascinating.
