Volume: Fabrication Inspiration and Strategy

About the Work:

“Volume” is a wearable tech garment to be worn around the neck and shoulders. The garment is audio activated and reacts the volume of the wearer’s voice by expanding the volume of space that it and the wearer occupy; the shoulders of the piece expand based on the volume of the wearer’s voice. This work engages with the ideas of vulnerability and both shared and personal space. This is garment will be made for the “Urban Woman” who gleefully demands attention and space; who delights in taking up space.

Related Projects and Technologies:

memory wire and paper

flapping crane

Both of these projects use Fexinol (aka Memory Wire) to create movement.  I plan to harness this technology to create movement in the shoulder of the “Volume”garment.

Considering a design that works like this:

Both of these wearable tech projects use folded materials to to aid the expansion and movement of the garment. I am considering ways to incorporate this technique into the expanding shoulder of the “Volume” garment.

This artist used strategic folding to design incredibly dynamic 3d works. I am very interested in his technique.
