Final Concept: Volume
vol·ume : ˈvälyəm,ˈvälˌyo͞om/
noun
1. the amount of space that a substance or object occupies, or that is enclosed within a container, especially when great.
synonyms: capacity, cubic measure, size, magnitude, mass, bulk, extent;
2. quantity or power of sound; degree of loudness.
synonyms: loudness, sound, amplification;
The Idea:
I would like to make a garment that is audio activated and reacts the volume of the wearer’s voice by expanding the volume of space that it and the wearer occupy.
The Conversation:
This piece will be in conversation with the fashion industry’s obsession with structured garments. Specifically garments that both expand and confine the shape and movement of the human body:
This work will engage with the ideas of vulnerability and both shared and personal space:
It will participate in dialogue about the power of voice and the uses of physio-emotional data:
The Wearer:
This is garment will be made for the “Urban Woman”. This garment will be worn by ‘larger’ or ‘plus’ body sizes. This piece is made for a woman who gleefully demands space and who delights in her occupation and use of public space.
The (conceptual) Prototype:
A lot to think about: I’m considering neck pieces for the sake of mic placement. I am also thinking about creating structure and maintaining flexibility- I want this garment can expand without being difficult to wear. Spikes and other threatening shapes are an inspiration.
These thoughts led me here:
- Exploring structure. 3D framing.
- Exploring personal space and mic placement.
- thinking about intimidation
- Imagining the intersection.
